    Description

The Leopold Tribute Canoe was created at Covered Bridge Country Canoe Works in Winterset, Iowa. Partners and craftsmen Bob Lafollette and Jim Liechty incorporated Leopold Red Oak and Starker-Leopold Sugar Maple into the canoe, which they donated to the Alliance for its fund raising project. T hose special pieces of wood came from century-old trees on the Starker-Leopold property, felled by strong winds. If you have ever dreamed of having a one of a kind, top of the line canoe, this may be your chance!
The nonprofit Leopold Landscape Alliance recently purchased the Aldo Leopold Childhood Home in Burlington, a neighbor to their Starker-Leopold house. In addition to restoring and maintaining two adjoining Leopold family homes and their grounds for interpretation, the Alliance encourages landscape scale conservation in the Iowa/Illinois Mississippi River region.
Playing a key role in that fundraising effort is a beautiful wood strip "Pack" canoe. Volunteers have "portaged" the Leopold Tribute Canoe to numerous events and presentations, easily gaining the attention of members of the general public, whether or not they paddle.
